The introduction to the museum begins with a graphic timeline in the main hall, which takes visitors from the founding of the first stockaded town in the 16th century, to the territorial claims of its northern neighbours and the burning of the town by the British in 1854.

The exhibition includes not just historical information about the place, but also an account of the local people’s main occupation – fishing, their way of life and personal stories.

Unique exhibits are a matter of special pride: old books, an authentic iceboat, household items, personal belongings, and old photographs, most of which were donated to the museum by local residents.

Particularly noteworthy are the model of the now-defunct Resurrection Cathedral, which was lost in a fire in 1854, the national Sámi costume and the reconstruction of a traditional hut.

The museum will be of interest to both Kola residents and those from neighbouring towns on the Kola Peninsula who want to learn more about their native land, and to tourists from other countries and regions of Russia who will be able to learn about local history and culture.
